Why I want to make this game
It began with a thought experiment when I was in middle-school - would I be able to survive in the forest if I could no longer live in the city due to natural disaster, electrical grid failure, etc.?
However, it wasn’t until after graduating college and starting my first job that I started thinking more about this idea.
The initial idea was to create a “survival app” that would generate out the necessary information for a person in that area to know how to survive and navigate in the area. However, this work soon became overwhelming, as the amount and quality of data per region can become challenging to extract and update over time.
I set this idea aside for a number of years, until I began thinking about this idea again.
Given that the objective was the learn and to test myself on whether I could survive in various scenarios, why not turn it into a game? Many intro courses to bushcraft only show their students the basics of survival - perhaps this concept could be extended out into this game. For every terrain, for the general plants in major regions, for a person’s body type and limitations, one could challenge themselves to see how far they could make it. And if there’s enough demand and funding, introduce multi-player mechanics to see how groups of people can survive out in the wilderness.
Now that I’m in a place where I’ve gained enough experience across various startups, working in multiple departments, and having taken a few courses in bushcraft, I believe that it’s the right time to begin seriously working on this.
I have a set of milestones I need to reach in order to make the next step happen, but I’m going to do what I can in the next 3 months to generate out a vertical slice and assess user interest. Provided that enough users show interest in this, I’ll switch to working full time on this game.
That means that If this game speaks to you at all and you’re interested on receiving updates to this game , you can enter in your email address on sign-up form at the bottom of this page (or on the Contact page) to receive updates and I’ll get a general idea on how many people are interested in this too.
I’m really looking forward to making this game happen, hope you are too.
